About

Leading the way toward an energy-abundant future.

We empower energy experts to realize the full potential of geothermal as an abundant, globally accessible form of baseload energy.

By leveraging synergies between the oil and gas and geothermal industries, GEODE will drive the implementation of our shared vision for a geothermal-powered future.

Our roadmap aims to accelerate geothermal growth and development by:

  1. 01

Facilitating technology transfer from oil & gas to geothermal

  2. 02

Consolidating data availability & demonstrating the commercial viability of geothermal energy within oil + gas infrastructure

  3. 03

Dismantling the barriers to geothermal expansion

  4. 04

Collaborating with industry partners and educational institutions to develop the geothermal workforce needed to bring geothermal to scale

By addressing these priority areas, we can accelerate the growth of geothermal energy as part of a secure, reliable, and sustainable energy future.

Our Timeline at a Glance

Year 1

  • Form and convene 17 Working Groups and Councils to identify and address key challenges and opportunities, gathering SMEs from geothermal and oil & gas industries
  • Develop roadmaps to transfer technologies, best practices, and methodologies from oil and gas, covering multiple facets
  • Create venues to establish a common language and understanding between the oil and gas and geothermal industries and facilitate access to updated information on geothermal potential
  • Seed new local geothermal innovation ecosystems by mapping competencies and facilities across the United States research institutions, with a focus on entrepreneurship and go-to-market strategies
  • Provide access to the general public to all the deliverables of Year 1

Year 2-5 (Intended)

  • Implement the technology roadmap to adapt oil & gas technology to geothermal environments
  • Deploy "first-of-a-kind" geothermal demonstrations to catalyze growth
  • Support expansion of geothermal projects through innovative financing and funding
  • Engage stakeholders, policymakers, and the public to build support for geothermal energy
  • Implement a geothermal workforce training plan and certification program
  • Work towards achieving DOE's Enhanced Geothermal Shot™ cost reduction targets

By Year 5 we intend to have...

  • Addressed major obstacles constraining geothermal development
  • Deployed a sufficient number of "first-of-a-kind" geothermal demonstrations to catalyze self-sustaining growth
  • Primed the project, financing, and off-taker pipeline to scale successful demonstrations
  • Catalyzed meaningful engagement from oil and gas industry partners in geothermal research and development
  • Positioned geothermal energy as a significant, reliable, and cost-competitive clean energy source for the future.

The GEODE Consortium

GEODE is a first-of-its-kind collaboration led by Project InnerSpace and the Society of Petroleum Engineers and funded by the US Department of Energy.

  • Project InnerSpace

Project InnerSpace is the leading independent organization dedicated to rapid global development of geothermal energy.
  • Society of Petroleum Engineers

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a not-for-profit professional association engaged in the exploration and production of oil and gas and related energy resources.
  • U.S. Department of Energy

The Energy Department ensures America’s security and prosperity by addressing its energy, environmental, and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions.
